2 Month Checkup - The Shots Heard Around the World

Talia's 2-month check-up occurred this past Friday - parents know that this exam includes the first round of immunization shots. After 2 months of only knowing hugging, swaddling, eating, brief symptoms of hunger, and various "movements" in the intestines, an infant really hasn't experienced any real pain yet. And Talia is no exception.

We were fairly well prepared for this exam; we read books, talked to friends who recently went through this, called the doctor beforehand to ensure that they approved of an early dose of Infant Tylenol, etc. We came to the doctor's office ready to calm an upset baby; we were prepared to feed Talia if she seemed hungry, we brought the secret "sugared pacifier" (thanks Amy!), and ice packs were ready in the car to help with potential swelling.

The first immunizations consist of one oral dose and three separate shots, all done in the upper legs. These immunizations take care of 8 different diseases, though the MMR vaccine is not part of this round. Talia was comfortably laying on the table when the first shot was given - in less than 3 seconds her face turned bright red like a tomato! At the same time, she shut her eyes so tightly that tears started coming out of the seams. We could also tell that she held her breath for a short time after the shots were given. It was truly a sad sight! Of course, some crying proceeded for the next 15-20 minutes, but all-in-all she was a trooper.

On a more pleasant note, Talia is growing at a generous pace. So lookout Caden, she's catching up! Here's a recap of her current key stats:
  • Weight: 10 lbs, 11 oz, 50th percentile
  • Height: 22 1/2", 50th percentile
  • Head Circumference: 15 1/4", 50th percentile
  • (Hair Density: RIDICULOUS!)
  • (Face: VERY CUTE!)

OK, the last two aren't part of the "official" exam, but they're true nonetheless.

Until next time...

Talia is too sweet for shots! We will have to give out extra kisses for the little patient when she's here!
